Upcoming trip to Vietnam

Next week, Daniel and I are leaving for a long-planned trip to Vietnam -- we'll be traveling from Nov 19 through Dec 5. I've resurrected this abandoned blog as a place to document the trip, so friends and family who are interested can follow along. We'll post periodic updates, dependent on internet access availability.

Our general itinerary is that we are flying into Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in the south and working our way northward to Hanoi, staying along the coast, then flying back down to HCMC for another day or two before we head back home.

A lot of people have asked us why we chose to visit Vietnam -- until recently, it wasn't a country that was on my radar in terms of a travel destination. My understanding is that it's been in the last 10 years or so that tourism has begun to take off there (they currently get something like 4m visitors per year, up from just 250,000 in 90s). For our trip, the seed was planted a few years ago when Daniel saw a friend's trip photographs (she is originally from Vietnam, and had gone back for a visit after many years in the US). Once we started researching the country, it seemed like it would be a fascinating and fairly accessible place to visit.

Here are the areas we plan to hit:

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) –  country's largest city, a bustling urban business center

So that's the trip in a nutshell. We'll be spending the next week packing, taking care of final details, and trying to avoid getting the flu... :)

Check back next week for an update. Feel free to comment.

  2. Jimmie, you're sweet... :) Trying to use the trip as the motivation to start blogging, keeping Flickr updated, etc. I've started my own blog at least a half a doze times over the last 10 years and have never followed through... Of course, nothing can top Whippleworld for blog awesomeness.
